ROBERT LOPEZ, Gabriel Iglesias had wanted to be a comedian since he was 10, but he had no desire to take the microphone when he finally made it onstage in 1997. He was going through a bad breakup and had to be physically hauled in front of the audience. But the experience was good therapy, and stand-up became his mistress. Since then Iglesias, 27 has performed with Britney Spears and N' Sync and appeared on Comedy Central and the Tonight Show. Tonight he will be the debut act at the Houston Improv comedy club. "Houston is a very big comedy town," he said. "It's great that they chose me. They could have easily picked somebody else." A native of San Diego, Iglesias' interest in comedy blossomed when his mother brought home an Eddie Murphy movie. Two weeks later he decided to audition for a fifth-grade talent show. "Me and a friend entered that show, but then he didn't show up," he said. "I started doing impressions. That was when I decided what I wanted to do." Citing Paul Rodriguez, Bill Cosby and Robin Williams as his main influences, Iglesias said the best advice he's ever received is to work clean. "If you work clean you can work anywhere," he said. "I tell storeis, paint pictures, make references to hanging out, going to the mall." Iglesias said he likes Houston for its barbecue restaurants. He also had one of his most memorable career moments here when he split his shorts (which he later auctioned off) at H'Town's Arena Theatre. "I ended up in the lobby signing autographs in my underwear," he said with a laugh. Iglesias is working on a sitcom project with HBO and says his biggest concern is trying to stay fresh, as well as trying to drop 50 pounds. "Staying fresh when you're going up every night, that's the biggest challenge," he said. "You don't know when you hit it big, so I'm always striving for something bigger."
