Bowl XXXVII: Eventos Latinos By
HIRAM SOTO, Stand-up comedian Gabriel Iglesias won't be cracking jokes about the Oakland Raiders when he performs tomorrow at the Spreckels Theatre in downtown San Diego. "I can't say anything bad about them or else the cholos will beat me up," said Iglesias about some of the team's die-hard fans. The comedian will be one of several Latino artists on hand this Super Bowl weekend. Concerts include a pre-game show at Qualcomm Stadium featuring Tijuana-bred guitarist Carlos Santana with Michelle Branch and Beyoncé Knowles. Iglesias is headlining "The Big Ass Comedy Tour," which features top comedians Felipe Esparza and Rudy Moreno. The NFL also has sponsored several Latino-related events, including performances by Mexican actress and singer Laura Flores at the NFL Experience, in downtown San Diego. Organizers also are putting together community workshops, sports clinics and other activities in San Diego and Tijuana (see listings below). Iglesias, 26, was born in Chula Vista but now lives in the L.A. area. He has performed on the "Tonight Show With Jay Leno" and appeared on HBO and Showtime. He is due back with Leno Feb. 5 and is scheduled for a half-hour special on Comedy Central two days later. "I'm a mixture of Polo Polo and Robin Williams," said Iglesias, who likes to compare Mexican telenovelas and U.S. soap operas at his shows. "I like to tell stories like Polo Polo, but I also like be all over the stage." The show is tomorrow at 8 p.m. at the Spreckels Theatre, between First and Second, on Broadway. Tickets are $18.50 to $25.50. Information: www.ticketmaster.com or (619) 220-8497. Hiram Soto San Diego Copyright 2003 Union-Tribune Publishing Co. Special
